Boots 17 Glisten Nail Art with Fimo Cane Butterflies.

This is the final polish that I bought from the new Boots 17 Spring collection and it's a pinky orangey shimmer called Glisten. I think I prefer how it looks in the bottle more than on my fingers, but it is really pretty in the light. Pink at some angles and shimmery peach at others, it has a really soft and feminine look to it!

I hadn't cracked out the fimo cane in, literally, months so I thought I'd give them a go! I added some yellow fimo cane butterflies from BornPretty.com to the corner of each nail - very simple nail art today! Simply cut a very thin slice of fimo cane with a craft knife and use nail glue to keep it in place! Very spring inspired!

Boots 17 Juicy - Fruity Nail Art!

I have another of the Boots 17 spring polishes to show you today! It is a bright, lime green with micro-shimmer. I was tempted to do some floral nail art, but thought I would honour the name of the polish and do something Juicy!

This is 3 coats of Boots 17 Juicy - it goes on a bit sheer but the colour builds nicely and the shimmer looks lush, I don't usually like shimmer! I added some apples using Barry M red, Barry M Mushroom and Barry M Spring Green

I used a dotting tool to create the details and Claire's White Nail Art Pen to add the shine! I topped it off with a coat of Seche Vite.

Easter Nail Art Tutorial - Cadbury's Mini Eggs!

This design was suggested to me by my best friend Sara - as soon as she said it, I knew it had to be done, if only as an expansion on the Cadbury's Chocolate Manicure! I worked tirelessly on a tutorial for it so you can all do it yourselves at home :D I know it's a bit early for Easter Manicures, but it's that time of year where Mini Eggs hit the shops an I love them! I don't know if you can get them in the US, but FIND THEM. THEY ARE LIKE EASTER-TIME CRACK.

This will also be part review for Boots 17 new nail polishes which I picked up last week. I chose 3 of them - Mellow Yellow, Glisten and Juicy. They're really fresh, bright spring/summer colours so I really couldn't resist. First up is Mellow Yellow, a gorgeous mid-tone yellow with gold micro-shimmer. It's beaaautiful.

The application of Mellow Yellow was lovely, this is two coats and there is no visible nail line (VNL). It's glossy and dries relatively quickly. From experience, 17 polishes go thick and unusable rather quickly so invest in a polish thinner like Seche Restore if you want to keep this bad boy for more than a few months.

The perfect yellow for a mini eggs packet, I hear you say? Yes, it is. Tutorial time!

1. Start with your yellow base and take a chocolate-brown polish like Barry M Mushroom. Draw large ovals in a sporadic pattern across the nail. This is the outline of the eggs!

                        
2. Take a selection of pastel coloured polishes. I chose American Apparel Office (green), Collection 2000 Candyfloss (pink), Natural Collection White and Collection 2000 Angel Wings (purple/grey). Paint over your brown ovals with the pastel shades, but leave a small brown outline.

3. Time to add some brown speckles to the eggs! Take a dotting tool (or a toothpick if you don't have one!) and take a small bead of your brown polish on the end. dab this gently onto your pastel eggs.

4. Take a purple polish or purple Nail Art Pen. This step is much easier to do when you have the control of a Nail Art Pen, but if you have a steady hand then go for it with a small brush. Write the words "Mini Eggs" in the Cadbury's font on your thumb. This is optional, you could always just draw more Mini Eggs!

5. Add a topcoat to protect your design from wear and tear and to make it super glossy. I used Seche Vite.

6. Stand back and admire your Cadbury's Mini Egg Easter Nail Art!

I added Claire's Matte Topcoat over the top to achieve that powdery look and feel that mini eggs have.

There you are! Cadbury's Mini Egg nails, perfect for Easter! If you've given up chocolate for lent then a) I don't know how you live b) You can enjoy chocolate in an alternative way!

Boots 17 Magnetized Polish

I'm not a fan of this metallic nail polish trend. I just don't like the finish of metallic polishes, it feels a bit childish and cheap to me - this  Boots 17 magnetized polish, however, is one aspect of this trend that I can fully get on board with, I LOVE IT. Maybe I'm just a sucker for novelty (I love my Del Sol colour changers for example), but I really love how the effect looks! It's like crazy robot fingers, they look so 3D! Like the recent crackle trend, this technique is maximum nail art effect, with minimum effort.

Magnetized polish works by formulating the lacquer with iron particles, and by holding a magnet with a pattern polarized into it over the nail, the iron particles become attracted to the patterned magnet, and the design appears in the polish. It's pretty innovative and scientific! Don't let anyone tell you the beauty industry is dumb haha!

17 are not the first company to bring these out, LCN, Fashionista and Essence both have a magnetized polish range, and in the UK, Nails Inc have bought some out too. Nails Inc magnetic polish retails for £13.00, however, and my 17 version cost me £4.99 and they literally look exactly the same. (I also bought the blue one, and 17 are giving away a free gift with 2 products bought - WINNER. Any way to justify my addiction).

Here is the finished look. Definitely took me a bit of practice, but I nailed it after a couple of tries! (Pun intended, haha):

The polish comes with the patterned magnet slotted on top of the polish handle, and it just lifts off:

This is what the polish looks like when un-magnetized (this is an option, don't forget! You can still just use it as a gunmetal, metallic polish! 2 for the price of 1!). It's a shimmery, gunmetal silver that is actually very pretty, and bang on trend. I took this photo with flash so you can see how sparkly it is, as well as how amazingly 3-dimensional the magnetized nails look:

The magnet has to be held over the polish while it's wet, and the best way to get the most pronounced effect, that I found, was to apply a thick layer and immediately place the magnet over the top as quickly as possible. The wetter the polish, the more defined the effect will be. The magnet has a little lip on one side, so you can rest it on your finger while you magnetize. It takes 5 seconds, maximum, to create the pattern :

I also bought the blue one, but I couldn't get it to work as well. I need to keep experimenting I think! I'm not sure these polishes are in every single boots, the advantage of living in Nottingham (where Boots originates from) is that they usually stock absolutely everything. You can, however, buy them online very easily. I really want to try out some different magnet patterns, I know LCN did a starburst one - now THAT would look awesome. Has anyone tried these magnetic polishes from 17? How do they compare to Nails Inc or Fashionista? I absolutely love them, and am so glad I bought 2 different colours!

EOTD - 17 Funfair: Pretty In Pink!

As I said, I'm hoping to introduce a few more general beauty-based posts into the mix, one a week or so, as that was my intention when I first started this blog in February! Here is what I've been playing with recently, a sweet, everyday look using 17 Funfair (available at Boots), a pastel pink shadow flecked with gold microglitter. It's really pretty, and I paired it with 17 Gold Digger in the corners:

sunlight - eyelids are weird when you're that close to them! I look like an old woman! Damn you Macro setting!

I really like this eyeshadow - 17's eyeshadows in general are great, they're really pigmented, affordable and all your favourites come in Trios, with two other complimentary shades that would create dramatic looks. As I wear this look during the day, and it is a softer look, I didn't add a third (darker) shade to the crease of the lid, or any eyeliner to the water line as it would have made it too harsh, in my opinion. The slick of Liquid Liner is enough drama for this 'pretty in pink' look! :D

She's My Cherry Pie

If you haven't been over to www.bornprettystore.com, seriously, check it out! I get a lot of my nail art supplies from there (my brushes, rhinestones, fimo canes etc), because they are so affordable, and it's free international shipping - always a bonus! They often run little contests and give away freebies too, which is great - they're a really customer-friendly company with a wide range of supplies.

I was sent some of their heart-shaped rhinestones to try out,* and was struggling to think of a design to incorporate them into. I've wanted to do a Manicure along these lines for a while, using cherries, and thought I may as well use some of the red heart rhinestones :D

I started with a base of American Apparel Palm Springs, a lovely peach nude, and used a dotting tool to add some red dots in Boots 17 Knockout Red. I added some highlights and shading with Nails Inc Shoreditch High Street and Claire's White Nail Art Pen, and some stalks using Claire's Jade Green and Barry M Spring Green. On the accent nail, I used Born Pretty Store's heart-shaped rhinestones as the cherry fruit, rather than painting them :D

And there we are! Because it's a nude base, it reminded me of cherry pie :D

Here is the wheel of Heart Shaped Rhinestones, they come in 12 different colours, and you get around 30 of each colour, I'd say:

As you can see, the stock picture is rather misleading regarding the amount of rhinestones you actually receive. where the stock picture is jam-packed, the reality is you probably only get half that amount - if that. Nowhere in the item description does it specify how many rhinestones you will receive. This is really the only criticism I have here, as they really are a great product, some people may be disappointed, however.

The packaging is a good idea, the top of the wheel rotates round to reveal each segment at a time, however the rhinestones do become statically charged, and stick to the top, which leads to the colours getting all mixed up. It doesn't really bother me, as I still think it's a better method of storing them than having them stuck to a sheet of acetate, like the Kiss ones I bought from Superdrug. 

The hearts really are sweet, and are a great alternative to regular circular rhinestones - I love them! They're the perfect size, around 2mm, and the range of colours mean you can literally incorporate them into any design.

The wheel costs $3.33 (£2.06), with free shipping, which is fantastically cheap considering the quality and amount you get (even if you are misled in the stock picture!). They also get cheaper the more wheels you buy, for example, if you buy ten wheels, you get a 10% discount.

These took around 2 weeks to reach me in the UK, I'm not sure how long it would be for anywhere else in the world, but the website says to allow up to 4 weeks. The service is great, though, and there's always someone on the email who is quick to reply to enquiries you might have.

Boots 17 Crackle Polish

Boots' exclusive cosmetic brand "17" have well and truly jumped on the crackle-wagon, launching their own goldy-silvery Crackle Polish. Oooooooh the elusive and rarely seen left hand: -

The larger looking patch of purple on my pinky isn't a crack...its a smudge...lolz

Looking at these photos, it's growing on me....

                              
I'm not quite sure what I make of it so far. I like that it's freely available, cheap and a different colour to the other crackle polishes out there, but I prefer to see more of the base colour showing through. I also wish it was more gold.
Underneath the Crackle is Barry M Boots Ltd Edition, and its such a gorgeous mid-purple that it upsets me that it cant be seen through that much! It doesn't seem it from the photos, but my nails literally just look like a Champagne colour from a distance. The application was a dream though, this is a thin coat (thick coat on the thumb - they kind of crackled the same though, regardless) and it's a really smooth polish with a lovely shimmer. It doesn't dry as matte as the Barry Ms, nor is it as gloopy and fast-drying. You can see Barry M Instant Nail Effects HERE for comparison. Barry M cracks more - same purpose, totally different effects! Jury is still out on which one I prefer, they are both very different.

I have a different topcoat on the other hand, which I can't wait to show you tomorrow - I love it! :D

FOTD Green Eyed Monster

...Well, not "monster" hopefully. I used to rock this look a lot in my final years of school, I was a lot bolder with my style back then - I had pink hair for a start! I met my good childhood friend Emma for a free lunch today. I am a 'mystery diner' which means we get £40 to spend on food if we do a review afterwards! SWEET DEAL! We stuffed our faces, naturally. I was wearing a forest green dress from forever 21, and I decided to co-ordinate my make-up -

I absolutely HATE taking pictures of myself haha! here we have:-

• FACE - Benefit Erase Paste in Medium, Rimmel Stay Matte foundation in 100 Ivory, MeMeMe Blusher in Rouge (these are meant to be a dupe for the benefit blushers, and although very pigmented, this is muuuuch redder than Coralista despite looking almost identical in the box. I'll have to do a comparison one day)
• EYES - I used a very, very old 17 green eye palette. Dark forest green, light green and a yellowy gold - none of them have names. I don't think they do the exact combination anymore, but their green Eye Shadow Trio will do a treat, with a yellow gold shadow, in creating this look. Eyeliner is H&M Brown, Mascara is Max Factor False Lash Effect.
• LIPS - Topshop Lip Polish in Iced Coffee. 

Here's a couple of shots so you can see the blending on the eyes -

This look is dead easy and you can use the same technique with literally any 3 shades of you choice. I started with the medium green on the eyelid, then used the gold in the corner, blending it outwards and slightly under the eye. I then took my darker shade of green, with a smaller shadow brush, and blended this from the outside edge inwards, creating a slight taper as I went, taking it under the eye and across to about halfway. Added some eyeliner to the water line and just along the top lash line, some mascara, and voila!

This is what my hair looks like from the back today, a messy rosette with the hair from the crown:

Another easy one - take two medium sized pieces of hair from each side of the crown, bring to the back of the head and pin in a cross shape, with 2 bobby pins, so one overlaps the other (this will hold it in place better). Take the little pony bit and wrap it around your finger so it makes a twist. Form the twist into a circle and pin in place at the end and the top, weaving the bobby pin inside the rosette so it cannot be seen. Spritz with hairspray. Five minute up-do!
